Mr. John Riley
I grew up on the East Side of Indianapolis. After high school, I attended the Citadel in Charleston, SC on a Navy ROTC scholarship. I received my bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy. During ten years of active duty in the Navy, I attended the Naval Postgraduate School and received a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (with Space Systems Engineering). After leaving the Navy, I spent several years in engineering and management. In 2004, I resigned as a senior IT manager at the Indianapolis Star in order to pursue a teaching career. I completed a transition-to-teacher program in mathematics, physics and earth/space science.
I then completed eight years teaching mathematics and science at Scecina Memorial High School. I am a musician, recently retiring from the 38th Infantry National Guard Band. I am now teaching mathematics at Shortridge High School. After 14 years teaching math and science, I now also do workshops in modern math methods and work with teachers around central indiana to develop project-based math classrooms. I may also be seen coaching Academic Super Bowl, helping out with music programs or playing guitar and singing with the students.
